Why Go Greek?

Academic Excellence

Academic achievement is a value of the Old DominionUniversity fraternity and sorority community. Members are encouraged to strive for scholarly excellence through incentive programs, study partners, workshops and study hours, and national recognition. Members are rewarded for their academic achievements through chapter events and by membership in the Order of Omega Greek Honor Society and meeting community leaderships. Each fraternity and sorority maintains internal academic standards that all members are expected to achieve. All chapters have shown there smarts by having better then the all-university average.

Brotherhood/Sisterhood

If you ask any fraternity or sorority member the most important aspect of his or her college experience, she/he will no doubt tell you about the lasting friendships made through the Greek system. Membership in a fraternity or sorority is for life. When individuals join a Greek Organization, they will make friends within their chapter and throughout the Greek community for the rest of their life. Each organization instills a unique bond that is often called brotherhood or sisterhood. Both are nurtured through shared work, community service projects, intramural athletics, socials, and the successes and frustrations of self-governing groups of men and women. You also build a great relationship with the millions of other Greeks in the world.

Leadership Development

Today, employers seek individuals who have been actively involved in leadership roles on campus, and who possess an array of practical and transferable skills. Since fraternities and sororities are self-governing, they offer a wealth of opportunities for members to take leadership positions. The following are just a few of the learning situations available in a Greek organization conflict resolution, meeting planning, committee projects, membership recruitment, event coordination, risk management, budget maintenance. Greek life offers opportunities to be a leader in various campus activities, as well as in individual chapters. Greeks are leaders in the Student Government Association, Presidents Council, Student Life, Campus Recreation, varsity sports and cheerleading, just to name a few. Many successful entertainers, athletes, and United States presidents were members of Greek organizations.

Network/Support

On a campus with over 23,000 students, it is important to find a network of friends and allies to provide the support needed to be successful. As an undergraduate, the fraternity/sorority experience provides opportunities to meet students from other campus chapters. Members are encouraged to participate in other campus life programs and to join other student organizations. Intramural sports and special campus events provide even more opportunities to meet students, faculty and staff from various agencies and departments. The chapter also provides opportunities for members to meet brothers and sisters from chapters at other campuses, usually through a regional or national leadership conference. The fraternity and sorority experience is not limited to the college years, as it continues through adulthood. Alumni/associations are available across the country and the potential for career connections are endless. Alumni/ae and national volunteers provide advice and guidance for the chapter and its members as well as serve on house and alumni/ae corporations.
